- Identify all your negative emotions
- Find your body's EFT Tapping points
- Learn to relieve any negative emotion
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also called “acupuncture for the emotions” is a branch of Energy Psychology that deals with relieving and obtaining freedom from any negative emotion held by an individual. EFT is based on the concept of the Traditional Chinese Medicine’s (TCM) body energy system or acupuncture points and the body’s energy meridian system. In the TCM concept, which has been successfully practiced by the Chinese and other oriental cultures for thousands of years, there is an energy highway inside the body called the meridian system. There are 14 major energy pathways or meridians connecting all the major organs of the body. This meridian system is invisible to the naked eye. “Chi” or Universal Life Force Energy flows through this energy pathway. Any blockage or constriction of Chi in the meridian system causes all kinds of emotional problems that can ultimately manifest into physiological disease. Western science acknowledges that the underlying cause of a majority of diseases is stress related.
EFT utilizes simple tapping of fingers on specific acupuncture points in the meridian systems, this tapping carried out along with certain verbal affirmations results in clearing energy blockages, thus, causing relief from the negative emotion. Negative emotions like fear, guilt, shame, sadness, stress, anxiety and depression are caused by disturbance or blockage of free flowing Chi in one or more of the 14 major meridians. All negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body’s energy or meridian system. EFT helps in clearing out the disturbances in the meridian system by tapping on specific acupuncture points to enable Chi to move freely and harmoniously. When energy blockages are removed and there is a free flow of Chi through the meridian systems the negative emotions will fade away.
EFT Tapping Points/Acupuncture points:
There are a total of 10 acupuncture points in the upper body which are used for tapping and releasing the blocked energy. These 10 acupuncture points are designed to activate all the 14 major meridians in the body since some acupuncture points lie at an intersection of 2 meridian lines, tapping on this point activates both the meridians. In EFT the individual should focus on the pain, fear, stress, anxiety or any other negative emotion bothering the individual. Tapping carried out in a special pattern explained below will make the negative emotions gradually lose their energy and release them from the system.
The 10 EFT tapping points:
- Top of the head (Crown area)
- Side of eye
- Under the eye
- Under the nose
- Collar bone
- Under arm (Few inches below armpit)
- Inside wrist (3 fingers from the wrist line)
- Karate chop
The EFT tapping sequence:
Identify the issue:
Compose a problem statement or phrase describing and acknowledging your ailment such as “I am terrified of public speaking”.
Test the Intensity of the emotion:
The next step is to measure this fear by saying out and feeling the emotion. Observe and record this fear by giving it a numeric value on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 corresponds to lowest value and 10 corresponds to the highest value or the strongest emotion related to fear e.g. you record a value of 8 out of 10 which shows how strong the emotion of fear is.
The setup affirmation:
In the next step make a statement acknowledging your fear but accept yourself in spite of it. The new statement should have a positive twist to it such as “Even though I am terrified of public speaking, I deeply and completely love and accept myself”
Next repeat the statement/affirmation 3 times while simultaneously tapping on the Karate chop acupuncture point a few times (8-10). While saying out the affirmation put energy and authority in the second part of the statement i.e. “I deeply and completely love and accept myself”
In the sequence phase you start by finger tapping on the different acupuncture points of the body in the following pattern. You begin by tapping on the Crown area of the head 8-10 times while repeating the initial problem statement or the reminder phrase 3 times i.e. “terrified of public speaking”. You then move to the eyebrow, the side of eye, under the eye, under the nose, the chin, the collar bone, under the arm and finally the inside wrist area. Tapping on all the points should be carried out 8-10 times while repeating the initial problem statement 3 times.
At the end of the above tapping sequence you take a deep breath in and slowly exhale. You then reassess your feelings associated with the fear by measuring it on a scale from 1-10. Let’s say that your fear level dropped down to a number 6, which shows an improvement of 2 points.
You then repeat the whole process one more time starting from the set up affirmation with the karate chop point tapping and then going through the whole sequence of tapping from the crown of the head all the way to the inside wrist. This process should be repeated till the fear level comes down to the lowest desired level for your comfort.
